Summer Safety Tips

Summertime is in full swing with temperatures heating up and longer days in the sunshine. However, there are a lot of risks when it comes to the summer season and making sure to be safe is important. Here are some quick summer safety tips to keep your summer vacation fun and worry free.

Stay Hydrated

An easy, but very important thing to remember while spending a day in the sun is to stay hydrated. Sweating in the sun can leading to dehydration a lot quicker than most people think. It is always advised that you should consume eight 8 oz. glasses of water a a day, but if you are spending the day being active in the heat you should up this number to 10 at the minimum. Always make sure to have a water bottle with you while at the beach or playing a round of golf. Water is important!

Pool Safety

Pool safety is one of the most important things to focus on during the summer season, for children and adults alike. For children’s safety, make sure to always have an adult supervising swimming that actively can save a child if needed. For pools with pool lifts, make sure children do not abuse or play with equipment. Lifts should be disabled when not in use. When using a pool lift, make sure the passenger is securely fastened in and is prepared to be lowered into the pool. Other things to consider include avoiding rough horseplay, making sure everyone is comfortable in various depths, etc.

Sunscreen

It’s very important to be diligent about applying sunscreen while playing in the sun. Try to avoid suntan lotion as it doesn’t protect you as much as it attracts the sun to create a tan. 30 SPF is a good choice for those that do not burn easily, however those with more fair skin should find a higher level sunscreen to ensure they don’t burn. Sunburn can lead to long term effects like skin cancer, wrinkles, and more.

Tick Bites

Ticks are most common during the summer season and can cause a lot of problems for those that they choose to bite. Ticks are responsible for a variety of illnesses including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, both can be very serious. Some ways to prevent tick bites include: long clothing, bug repellent for you and your pets, staying on trails rather than venturing into overgrown areas, performing regular tick checks, being aware of symptoms, and calling your doctor if you have any concerns or questions.

Summer should be a season filled with fun in the sun, complete with a worry free mindset. So stay safe this summer and follow these quick tips!
